What the Rebbe Reb Hershel Did When Testing Out His New Pen

The sefer Kav HaYashor (end of Perek 99) brings that the Rebbe Reb Hershel of Krakow zt”l had the custom that when he wanted to try out his pen/quill he would write the name “Amalek” / “Haman”/ “Zeresh” and he would then erase it, in order to fulfil the mitzvah of: מחה תמחה את זכר עמלק אפילו מעל העצים והאבנים – “Blotting out any remembrance of Amalek, even from wood and stones.”
